Recruitment is improving, but not in every subject.
NFER's 2026 report on the teacher labour market paints a better picture than it has for years. Teachers were less likely to leave last year than in any year since 2010/11, outside the pandemic, and trainee numbers have risen, helped by weaker job prospects elsewhere. Maths is forecast to recruit 22% above target.
The picture isn't even, though. Secondary recruitment overall is forecast at 86% of target, and eight of 17 secondary subjects, including business studies, drama, RE and design and technology, are expected to fall short. Primary teacher numbers are falling as pupil numbers drop, which makes primary posts more competitive.
