Who it's for

Early career, people leadership or moving into HR.

HR roles are usually read against the CIPD level they ask for, so it helps to know what each stage of the career needs to look like on paper. Here's how we approach each.

Early and mid-career
State your CIPD level and membership clearly, along with anything you're studying towards. Level 5 is the one most mid-career adverts ask for, often with "or equivalent experience" alongside it, which means your casework has to do some of the talking. Say what kind of cases, roughly how many and how they ended: disciplinaries, grievances, absence, redundancies, TUPE transfers. Recruitment, onboarding and HR systems work sit alongside that, with time-to-hire or retention figures where you have them.
Leadership
At HR business partner level and above, hiring managers look for influence: which leaders you advised, what the business was trying to achieve, and what the people side looked like when you'd finished. That might be a restructure delivered without a tribunal claim, a pay framework rebuilt, or attrition brought down in a hard-to-staff team. Chartered CIPD membership is often required or preferred for HR director roles, so if you hold it, it goes at the top.
Career changers
If you're coming into HR from another role, the CIPD level you choose matters. Level 3 is the usual starting point if you're new to the field, and Level 5 makes sense if you've already been handling people issues somewhere else. Going straight to Level 7 without that background can work against you. On the CV, lead with the people work you've already done, like managing absence, running interviews or handling difficult conversations, and put your study progress near the top.

The market

New employment law, a cautious hiring market.

28
areas of employment law changed by the Employment Rights Act 2025
6
month qualifying period for unfair dismissal from January 2027
22%
of employers were planning redundancies in spring 2026

The Employment Rights Act 2025 became law in December 2025 and is being phased in through 2026 and 2027, covering 28 areas of employment law. From 1 January 2027 the qualifying period for unfair dismissal drops from two years to six months, and the cap on unfair dismissal compensation is being removed. For employers, that makes strong employee relations and well-run processes more valuable than they've been in years.

Hiring, meanwhile, has slowed. The CIPD's latest Labour Market Outlook puts the net employment balance at +9, close to its lowest level outside the pandemic, and in the spring more than one in five employers were planning redundancies. HR teams are doing a lot of restructuring, casework and change right now, and those are the parts of your experience to put first.
