Who it's for

Early career, engineering leadership or moving into engineering.

Engineering covers a lot of disciplines, from civil and structural to mechanical, electrical and systems, and each has its own standards and tools. Here's how we approach each stage.

Early and mid-career
Your registration goes at the top if you have it: CEng, IEng or EngTech alongside your institution. "Working towards CEng" is fine to include if it's true and your experience backs it up. Write projects in a consistent shape, covering what it was, your role, the tools and standards you worked to, and the outcome. Name the software and the standards, whether that's Revit and Eurocodes or SolidWorks and ISO. Many roles are safety-critical, so show your permits, audits, CDM or HSE responsibilities, and tickets like CSCS or CompEx.
Leadership
The Chartered Engineer standard is built around technical accountability for complex systems with significant risk, and a senior engineer's CV should show exactly that. The design decisions you signed off, the risk you carried, the teams and budgets you ran and the programmes you delivered. Chartered status carries real weight in regulated and safety-critical sectors, and if you've mentored others through their own registration, include it.
Career changers
People come into engineering through apprenticeships, from the armed forces and from technical trades, and experienced engineers often move between sectors, from automotive into defence or oil and gas into renewables. Either way, the CV has to translate. Lead with the standards and tools that carry over, and describe your technical work in the language of the sector you're moving into. If you're heading into net zero work, sustainability experience is one of the skills employers find hardest to recruit.

new engineers and technicians needed in the UK each year

Engineering hiring has cooled along with the rest of the market, and candidate availability has risen sharply. The skills gap hasn't closed, though. The IET's 2025 Skills Survey found that 76% of engineering employers struggle to recruit people with the skills they need, and specialist sustainability skills were the hardest to find.

EngineeringUK estimates the UK needs around 124,000 new engineers and technicians a year to meet future demand, much of it driven by net zero. With more candidates chasing each role, the engineers who stand out are the ones whose CVs make their specialism, standards and registration obvious.
