A big employer, with a tightening Civil Service.
Around 6.2 million people work in the UK public sector, about 18% of the workforce, according to ONS figures for June 2026. The Civil Service employed 557,000 of them, and that quarter saw its first fall in headcount since 2021.
More reductions are expected over the spending review period that started in April 2026, as the government looks for efficiency savings. Fewer roles tend to mean more applicants per post, and a sift that's already strict about evidence becomes harder to pass with a generic CV.
The shape of the Civil Service surprises people. More than half of civil servants work in operational delivery, running services directly, rather than in policy.

Write in "I". Assessors can only mark your own contribution, so keep the context short and give most of the space to what you did and what came of it. Read the advert for what's tested at sift too, because some roles score the CV and others lean on the personal statement.
