Who it's for

Early career, supply chain leadership or moving into logistics.

Warehousing, transport, planning and procurement each read differently on paper. Here's how we approach each stage.

Early and mid-career
Lead each role with scale and a KPI that moved. In warehousing that might be pick rates, inventory accuracy or cost per case. In transport it's on-time delivery, fleet utilisation or fuel cost, and in planning it's forecast accuracy, stock turns or OTIF. Name your systems by vendor, whether SAP, Manhattan or Blue Yonder, because recruiters search for them. If you're a transport manager, your CPC belongs near the top, and for procurement roles CIPS membership is often one of the first things checked.
Leadership
At head of and director level, hiring managers want the network you ran and what you changed about it. That means the sites, fleet, headcount and spend under your management, then the big decisions, whether a WMS rollout, a move to or from a 3PL, a network redesign or an S&OP process built from scratch. Supply chain leaders are increasingly judged on resilience as well, so how you handled a supplier failure or a major disruption belongs on the page.
Career changers
Logistics takes people in from the armed forces, retail, hospitality and plenty else, and with much of the workforce over 45, employers are looking for new entrants. The sector's skills gap is increasingly about digital systems and compliance rather than headcount. If you're moving in, lead with the systems you've used, any licences or tickets you hold, and the operational problems you've solved elsewhere, written in logistics terms.

The market

Plenty of people, not enough of the right skills.

2.6m
people work in UK logistics, around 8% of the workforce
61.6%
of HGV drivers are aged 45 or over
47.7%
of warehouse managers are aged 45 or over

Logistics employs around 2.6 million people in the UK, roughly 8% of the workforce, according to Logistics UK's Employment and Skills Report 2026. The acute driver shortage of 2021 has eased, but the report argues the problem has shifted. Employers now struggle to find people with the skills for a more digital, automated and compliance-heavy operation.

The workforce is also ageing. More than 61% of HGV drivers and nearly half of warehouse managers are 45 or older. Experienced people with modern systems and process skills are in a strong position, and your CV should make those skills obvious.
